Heritage and Core Values
Van Conway’s work ethic and leadership style was forged at an early age. Conway began working at the age of 10, doing odd jobs at his father’s foundry. He always worked as many hours as he could because he felt he had to prove himself as someone who could stand on his own, even though he was the owner’s son. His dad never made much money, but taught him how to work. His dad never cut him any slack and was totally intolerant of under-performers.
These early lessons have held Conway in good stead as he rose to become Partner in Charge of the Emerging Business Department at Deloitte and founded the turnaround consulting firm Conway MacKenzie.
Several years into forming another firm, Van Conway & Partners, Conway continues to put stock in a leadership style that comes from within, investing in “good people” who want to make Van Conway & Partners their career home.
“Our company manual boils down to this – right and wrong,” Conway says. “The way we operate is pretty basic. If you live and work by the Golden Rule, there is no need for a 100-page manual. As John Wooden once said, ‘The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.’ That says a lot about our philosophy and how we operate.”
“If you want to be a great leader, then you want to surround yourself with people better than you,” Conway claims. “We want the next generation of leaders to be created from within the company.”
“We have a hard working and talented team, some of whom formerly worked for me,” said Conway. “As I’ve demonstrated over the course of my career, it’s my intent to treat everybody like family and to invest in their future.”
